The United States Department of Transportation National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's Traffic Safety Facts 2009 Data report states that in 2009 there were an estimated 9,640,000 vehicles involved in police reported crashes in the United States.  In addition, 1.97 million passengers were injured in traffic crashes in 2009.  Furthermore, 45,435 vehicles were involved in fatal collisions.  Most disturbing is that in 2009, 23,382 passengers were killed in traffic accidents in the United States.

According to a study by the North Carolina Department of Transportation, from January 1, 2004 to December 31, 2006 there were a total of 89,910 reported motor vehicle crashes in Charlotte, 53,912 in Raleigh, 31,937 in Durham, 23,973 in Greensboro, 21,261 in Winston Salem, 19,771 in Fayetteville, 12,822 in Wilmington, and 9,006 in Asheville.  (www.ncdot.gov/doh/preconstruct/traffic/safety/crashdata/rankings.html).  That same study indicates that from January 1, 2007 to December 31, 2009 there were a total of 90,810 reported motor vehicle crashes in Charlotte, 57,568 in Raleigh, 30,414 in Durham, 24,547 in Greensboro, 21,558 in Winston Salem, 24,795 in Fayetteville, 11,365 in Wilmington, and 9,052 in Asheville.  (www.ncdot.gov/doh/preconstruct/traffic/safety/crashdata/rankings.html).  With the exceptions of Durham and Wilmington, each of these cities saw an increase in reported motor vehicle crashes between these two time periods.  These cities have also experienced population growth during these time periods and with population growth comes increased motor vehicle traffic.  One of the unfortunate consequences of the increase in motor vehicle traffic on North Carolina's roads has been an increase in the number of reported motor vehicle collisions.
